Baumgartner Baumann welcomes Prof. Dr. Boris Paal as Of Counsel
Renowned AI, digital, and data law expert Prof. Dr. Boris Paal will join the Munich-based law firm BAUMGARTNER BAUMANN, which specializes in data and digital law, on June 1, 2025.
Boris Paal holds the Chair of Law and Regulation of the Digital Transformation at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). There, he researches the legal challenges and implications of digital transformation with a focus on the digital and data economy, competition and innovation, artificial intelligence, and data governance. With more than 25 years of experience in cutting-edge academic research, practical consulting, and work as a judge, mediator, and arbitrator, he is one of the leading international legal experts in digital and data law.
Boris Paal will be bringing his experience and expertise to BAUMGARTNER BAUMANN with immediate effect.

After studying in Tübingen, Konstanz, and Oxford, among other places, and completing his habilitation in Heidelberg, Boris Paal was initially appointed founding director of the Institute for Media and Information Law and full professor of civil law with a focus on information law, media law, and Internet law at the University of Freiburg. After turning down several offers, he accepted a professorship in civil law and information law, data and media law at the University of Leipzig before being appointed to a “beacon” professorship at TUM in October 2023. At the same time, Boris Paal served for several years as a judge at the Hamburg Regional Court (Chamber for Copyright and IT Law) and works as a certified business mediator, mediator, and arbitrator. His research and teaching have taken him to numerous universities of excellence, including New York (Columbia, Fordham, NYU), Oxford (UK), Beijing (CUPL, Tsinghua), Seoul (SNU), Shang-hai (ECUPL, Jiao Tong), and Yale.
